2. About the new National Health Insurance ID

The national health insurance ID currently being used will expire on July 31st and will be replaced by a new ID on August 1st. The new ID will be sent out by the end of July.

Even for foreigners not working in a company, if your residency period exceeds three months, it is required that you have health insurance.

There is no penalty for not subscribing to health insurance. However, if you become ill or are injured in an accident, you would have to pay a much larger medical bill.

Additionally, there are medical institutions that will refuse service if you are not part of a health insurance plan.

If you decide to apply for health insurance later on to receive treatment, you would be required to pay for the entire total of the insurance premiums from the day you became a resident of Tochigi City.

If you are not properly insured, you may have issues later on so please pay your Health Insurance bills in a timely manner.

For joining or withdrawing from a health insurance plan, please notify within 14 days.

If you switch to a company-based health insurance plan, please return your National Health insurance ID to the health insurance section of the city hall.
