　私が夜間中学という言葉を知ったのは今から20年前です。当時私は宇都宮大学で社会人学生として学んでいました。そこで今の教育制度からこぼれてしまう人たちの受け皿としての夜間中学の存在を知りました。しかし、当時はまだ一部の地域にしか夜間中学は存在していませんでした。それから20年が経ちました。民間レベルで次々と自主夜間中学が設置され、それに伴い公立夜間中学もできてきています。時間はかかりましたが、ようやく栃木県にも令和8年度4月より、公立夜間中学が開校します。私は、とちぎ蔵の街自主夜間中学に関わりながら公立夜間中学を応援していきたいと思っています。皆さんもぜひ仲間に加わってください！（矢部昭仁）

It was 20 years ago that I first heard of the term night junior high school. At the time, I was a working student at Utsunomiya University. There, I learned about the night junior high school as a receptacle for those who could not learn enough in the current educational system. However, at that time, night junior high schools still existed only in some areas. Twenty years have passed since then. Private night junior high schools have been established one after another, and public night junior high schools have been established along with them. It has taken some time, but a public night junior high school will finally open in Tochigi Prefecture in April 2026. I would like to support the public night junior high school through my involvement in the Tochigi Kura no Machi Voluntary Night Junior High School. I hope you will join us!

Message from Tamaki Matsuo

　まず、「日曜日午前中の活動なのに、なぜ夜間という言葉を使うのですか？」という質問を受けたので、簡潔に答えます。考えてみれば、自然に出てくる質問ですね。現在、県、市、東京23区などが設置した公立夜間中学が、全国で53校あります。私はいくつかの公立夜間中学を見学しましたが、そこでは年齢も国籍も多様な人々が実に楽しそうに学んでいました。年齢は10代から80代まで、国籍もアジア、ラテンアメリカ、アフリカ、日本など、多様です。自主夜間中学という名称は、公立夜間中学のような学びの場を市民自らがつくって育てているということを伝えています。また、自主夜間中学関係者の大半は公立夜間中学がもっと増えて発展することを願うとともに、応援したい気持ちを持っています。自主夜間中学という名称には、そのような気持ちも込められていると言えるでしょう。
　さて、3月は高校受験のシーズン。今回の終わりの会では、18日（火）に定時制高校を受験する2人がみんなの前で「頑張ります！」と力強く語りました。他の学習者と応援スタッフが大きな声で「頑張って！」とエールを贈りました。2人の合格を心から祈っています。中学校に入学する外国人児童にとっては、楽しみと同時にたくさんの不安もあることでしょう。小学生の教室では、児童と応援スタッフが中学校での生活について真剣に話し合っていました。
　30日は、午前中は学習、午後は自主夜間中学の説明会と交流会です。どっちも参加してください！！
　昨年10月の開校式で紹介させてもらった空太は2歳になりました！

First, I was asked, “Why do you use the term ‘nighttime’ when your activities take place on Sunday mornings?” I will answer briefly. If you think about it, the question comes naturally. Currently, there are 53 public night junior high schools across the country, established by prefectures, cities, and the 23 wards of Tokyo. I have visited several of these public night junior high schools and found a diverse group of people of all ages and nationalities enjoying their studies. They ranged in age from teens to 80s, and included students from Asia, Latin America, Africa, and Japan. The name “Voluntary Night Junior High School” conveys the idea that citizens themselves are creating and nurturing a place of learning similar to a public night junior school. Most of the people involved in the voluntary night junior high schools wish to see public evening junior high schools increase in number and develop, and they also want to support them. The name “Voluntary Night Junior High Schools” also reflects this desire.
Now, March is the season for high school entrance exams. At the end of the meeting, two students who will take the entrance examination for a part time high school on Tuesday, March 18, said emphatically in front of everyone, “I will do my best! They spoke strongly in front of everyone. The other students and staff gave a loud “Good luck! We sincerely wish them success. For the foreign students who will be entering junior high school, there must be a lot of anxiety as well as excitement. In the classrooms of the elementary school students, the children and the support staff had serious discussions about life at the junior high school.
On the 30th, there will be a study session in the morning, and in the afternoon, there will be an information session about the voluntary night junior high school and a social event. Please join us for both!
Kuta, whom I introduced at the school's opening ceremony last October, is now two years old!
